Canine Car Safety-what you need to know.

When it comes to travelling in the car with your dog what is it you use to ensure their safety?

Surprisingly, there’s currently no law in Britain regarding restraining animals in the car, so it’s not illegal to have your Labrador travelling on the back, or even front seat, without a restraint.

However, common sense and the Highway code does suggest that restraining your pet, as you would yourself, is a good idea.

Rule 57 of the Highway Code deals with travelling with pets and states:

“When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars.”

Not all dog owners own cars and therefore they rely on transporting their pets in taxis or with the help of a friend or family member. This means for many owners dog guards are not always available or an option. Therefore which is the safest restraint or crate for your dog?

There are many on the market but you would be surprised to hear that a vast majority of them are not crash tested. Because there are no laws in the UK regarding vehicle pet restraint this means that there are currently no regulating bodies in the UK to check the effectiveness of products on the market. Some manufacturers may have carried out there own safety tests, one such manufacturer that has published crash testing findings is Safedog. You can visit there website at safedog.co.uk

In the US The Centre for Pet Safety performed crash testing in 2013 on several different styles and brands of harness or seatbelt. Only one offered crash protection, this being the Sleepypod Clickit Utility.
