Paul Manktelow at Discover Dogs
I always look forward to the big pet shows, especially those with dogs everywhere! Discover Dogs 2018 did not disappoint. With over 30,000 people expected at the event, the organisers put on a great selection of displays, demonstrations and shopping for the UK’s biggest canine fans.
I was there with the PDSA team on our big shiny new PetWise Hospital Truck, which was kindly commissioned with the support of the People’s Postcode Lottery. This amazing new vehicle is a fully equipped vet clinic with medical and surgical facilities. We will be taking it on tour to help pets in communities all over the UK.
Throughout the weekend we gave demonstrations on emergency and life-saving treatment. We had some great dogs join us from the Kennel Club Good Citizen Scheme, who were fantastic patients, allowing us to demonstrate bandaging of ears and paws. The most popular demos were CPR and it was fantastic to see so many children with a passion for keeping dogs safe and healthy.
You meet dogs from all walks of life at Discover Dogs, and I’m always moved when I meet assistance dogs who have a huge impact on people’s lives. One of the show highlights for me was to meet Porter. Porter is a very handsome and intelligent dog from Canine Partners who has literally changed his owner’s life. Amanda and her husband Ian told me about how Porter has given her back her independence and opened up the world for her. She’s not only able to do more, but she also feels better, has lost weight and is finding it easier to deal with her health conditions now that she has a supportive four legged friend at her side.
Another highlight of the day was to meet Finn the retired police dog, who was the brave recipient of our PDSA Gold Medal. It was an honour to host a meet and greet with Finn and tell his story of immense bravery. His actions to save his police handler, despite being stabbed multiple times by a knife wielding assailant, has really highlighted the important role of service dogs. Finn’s law is currently going through parliament and will hopefully secure and protect the lives of our hard working and brave service animals in the UK.
